Garten Meschen Spiele, a book that I admire for a long time. I saw the sample of the layouts for the first time at Emil Ruder’s book Typographie. At that time, I had no idea what is the book about. I felt the serenity of the lay out. The white space around the pictures gives a focus to the pictures. “A book containing pictures and text based on a grid pattern of nice squares. This pattern is the means of establishing a formal unity between the different amounts of text and different sizes and shapes of picture. The pattern should not be conspicuous in the final result but rather be concealed by the diversity of pictorial subjects and typographical values.” Emil Ruder.
I found out that the book was designed not only by Emil Ruder but also Armin Hofmann. My curiosity arose and I was eager to see the book in my hand. I would like to know how two great design masters collaborate to design a book. On 5 Jan 2008, I put a comment about the book at this website. I felt a bit embarrassed sometimes and my partner mentioned about my comment but now I feel happy that the note still there.
It would be great to ask Hofmann how did he work with Ruder. Unfortunately, I have no contact info with him. I asked about the book to whom known the best about Ruder’s design, Helmut Schmidt. He said “gaerten menschen spiele was published during my first time at the basel school ruder showed us the book page by page and he mentioned that the most difficult part was the selection from the many photos i guess he did that together with Hofmann but the typography of the book is 100% Emil Ruder.”
