Walter Herdeg was born on January 3rd 1908, in Zurich Switzerland. He wasn't aware of graphic design as a profession. By chance, he heard the existence of graphic class at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich. His family couldn't afford to pay the tuition. because of his talent and the support of Ernst Keller, Herdeg received a full scholarship. After he graduated in 1928, He left to Berlin and studied at the Staatliche Academie für Freie und Angewandte Kunst in Berlin under O.H.W. Hadank.
In 1930, He returned to Zurich and established his own studio. Years later, Walter Herdeg met Amstutz established Amstutz & Herdeg Advertising Editions. He was inspired by Gebrauchsgraphik, the Berlin-based magazine of international and created Graphis magazine in 1944 and after 246 issues, Herdeg handed over to M.Pedersen.
These are some examples of books and magazine that edited by Walter Herdeg. In the earliest issued, Herdeg worked with Amstutz as an editor. He is very open minded that even devoted a special issues for Japan and Finland edition. The packaging series are full of great information. I do really love the graphs diagram's cover designed by Dietmar R.Winkler. Most of the time, Herdeg asked other designers or illustrators to do the cover but he did the cover for Graphis Record covers. I posted one of his books, Archigraphia a while ago, a wonderful collection of signage designs. His contribution to the graphic design world was immense and fully deserved of the AIGA medal.
