Jean Georges Leon Carlu was born on May 3rd, 1900 in Bonnières-sur-Seine, France. Carlu was trained as an architect but at the age of 18 he changed his field to graphic and exhibition design. He is one of the pioneers of modern poster art a long side with A.M Cassandre. He belonged to the small group of artist which introducing a new visual expression since 1924. His design is more geometric compare to A.M Cassandre and Jean Colin. He was very influenced by cubism. He won a medal from the Art Directors Club for designing a first US defense poster in 1942 and at that year he lost his right arm in tramway. He was active promoting "Peace" and "Anti Fascist,". He also was one of the first who integrated photography and typography into poster. In 1953, he returned to France. He worked as a consultant for multiply companies, including Air France. He was also the second of Alliance Graphique Internationale president but sadly I couldn't find any information about him at the AGI's website.
