Alan Fletcher was born on September 27, 1931 in Nairobi, Kenya. Fletcher returned to England in 1936. He studied at the Hammersmith School of Art and then continue at the Central School of Art where he studied under Anthony Froshaug. At the school he met Colin Forbes, Theo Crosby, Derek Birdsall and Ken Garland. He also studied at the Royal College of Art where he met Peter Blake, Joe Tilson, Len Deighton, Denis Bailey, David Gentelman and Dick Smith. He moved to USA for his scholarship to study at the School of Architecture and Design at Yale University under Alvin Eisenman, Norman Ives, Herbert Mattter, Branbury Thompson, Josef Albers and Paul Rand. He met With Bob Gill in New York.
He founded the design firm Fletcher/Forbes/Gill in 1961. Four years later Gill left and replaced by Theo Crosby. Two new partnership, Kenneth Grange and Mervyn Kurlansky joined and Pentagram established in 1972. The most beautiful logo that he designed "V&A" logo in 1989. He left Pentagram in 1992.
