Helmut Schmid was born on February 1 1942 in Ferlach, Austria. He apprenticed as a typesetter in Germany and continued his education at the Basel School of Design in Basel under Emil Ruder, Robert Buechler, and Kurt Hauert.

He has worked in the field of graphic design from West Berlin, Stockholm, Basel, Montreal, Vancouver, Osaka, Stockholm to Düsseldorf. Since 1977, he has been working in Osaka, Japan. He dedicated his time not only for commercial works but also self-initiated projects and education. His essays on typography can be found in several publications including Baseline, Idea and Typographische Monatsblätter.

He edited one of the most important typography books, typography today published in 1980 by Seibundo Shinkosha and republished in 2003, published 2007 in China and 2010 in Korea. In 1989, he started a series of booklets, typography reflections, printed in single black. In 1997, he published the fourth of typography reflection series, the road to basel, an hommage to typographer and teacher Emil Ruder published by Robundo. In 2013, He designed Emil Ruder fundamentals published by Seibundo Shinkosha.

He was a lecturer at KDU (Kobe Design University) since 2000 to 2012. He also taught at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea from 2005 to 2006. He had a lecture from Basel, Beijing, Bombay, Mainz, Munich, Osaka, Tokyo, Singapore, Xian to Zurich.

All of his works show the meaning of an honest and sophisticated design. From the beginning of his career until today, he has always been true to his principles of design. It is very difficult to tell the period of time his works were designed because his design is timeless.
