After I bought a copy of Typographie, I saw a red cover version of the book on the Internet. I was wondering what it looked like inside. In Winter of 2006, my friends were studying in U.K on a student exchange program and I had the chance to go to Nottingham Trent University's library to check their collections. Finally, I found the mysterious red cover copy of Emil Ruder's Typographie. If I remember correctly it was a hard cover book and it claimed to be designed by Emil Ruder. Since I did not have much time to look at the details, I decided to buy a copy of the red cover Typographie published by Hastings House. It had less pages and the quality of the paper was really bad. It looked like a copy paper with no color and the text was only in English. I was still wondering, I did not feel that It was similar to the copy that I saw in the Nottingham Trent's library. At another ocassion, I saw another version on Ebay with a slightly different cover design. To satisfy my curiosity, I bought the book. It was in three languages and in color, printed on 220 pages of low quality paper.
Those books were sitting on my shelf until I contacted Helmut Schmid. I was really curious and sent a picture of the copies before I gave him a phone call. When I asked about the books, he was very upset. He said that they were not Ruder's design and those books had to disappear. He did not know who designed the books and how the books got published in USA. The red cover Typographie books by the unknown designer still remain a mystery.
If you would like to buy one make sure that you buy the hardcover version, I think I will keep the two pirated books for fun :)
