Otto Treumann Graphic Design in the Netherlands is a compilation of Otto Treumann's works from books, magazines, posters, stamps, symbols and logotype. The thing that I like about this book is how it shows his pictures in many occasions, his sketches and writing. I like the cover of the book but not the dust jacket. I found the text to be hard to read. It was done in 5 column grid with very narrow columns. Also, I have a problem with the index. It was very hard to get the description of the images and I had to flip the pages back and forth to see the description. The index works only when you see the picture but I find it impossible to find the images from the index page. I wish the index color was a paler color to represent Otto Treumann's color palate. Even though I came up with some negative feedback for the design of the book, it is still a good book to have. Otto Treumann's works are remarkable.
It's a pleasant surprise to see his definition of graphic design set in complete lowercase on the left side of the dust jacket :
a profession that gives you pleasure, and you get paid for it too
a bridge between creativity and technique
a profession in which you can dedicate yourself to a specific goal
an activity with a major role to play in society
bringing order to chaos
shuffling the existing order (a paradox!)
a task that stays with you
work that compels you to do your utmost
a task you could curse at times
a fulfillment when you succeed in making something of it

on the right side of the dust jacket :
graphic design is not:
a way to get rich quick
a chance to stay poor
a sacrifice
art
an 'artistic' calling
sheer craftsmanship that can be bought for whatever objective
a knack
work I would want do to as part of a team
work I can do in isolation (another paradox!)
a job
