"Franz Zeier, bookbinder, believes in clothing his books properly, in the right way: suitably for the content, in a style that makes the book pleasant to hold, as light as possible and easy to leaf through" - Jost Hochuli. What is the proper way of designing a booklet for a bookbinder? Jost designed a wonderful cover with a small die cut in the corner of dust jacket. I am truly fascinated by this cover as the contrast between the yellow and black colors makes the book seem exquisitely beautiful. This is a very good example of sophistication in simplicity. This booklet is a story about a thoughts on the book as an object of use by Franz Zeir, setting in 10pt Bembo.
Finally, I had a chance to meet up with Hochuli in person. A very modest person with lots of knowledge in history and design. If you would like to know more about Hochuli's artwork, you can check out AIGA exhibition, 60 Years of Book Design at St. Gallen National Design Center on 164 Fifth Ave. The show is currently open to public from June 16 to July 22, 2011 and better still, if you are planning to go to Hochuli's lecture and discussion, you can inquire anything about design or his artwork to Hochuli himself.
