Title: Schiff nach Europa
Publisher: Arthur Niggli (2000)
Language: German
Schiff nach Europa means Ship to Europe, a novel written by Markus Kutter. Karl Gerstner does painting and Kutter does writing on the side of their commercial work. "Kutter refers this novel as a synthetic, hypothetical drama. Friedrich Durrenmatt expanded the definition in his foreword: "These are two precise formulas for what (Kutter) undertakes: creating reality, not reporting it. He proceeds from various different points and employs different forms."
I was doing some research at The Herb Lubalin Study Center at the Cooper union and I read Schiff nach Europa in the spine. The book just sat next to me with other beautiful books. Even though the book is in German and has no dust jacket, I am still familiar with this title. I have been always admiring this book. Without thinking twice, I looked the book chapter by chapter. I admire Gerstner even more. Each chapter has different looks deepen on the form of tales, dramas, conversations and so on. Even though various design through out the book, Gerstner still able to make this book as one unit. His grid absolutely work flawlessly. I wish this book would be reproduce by Arthur Niggli.
"This was a gift from the author, who gave me another chance to realize a bit of integral typography. Yet despite all the playful experimentation and diversity, I was intent upon achieving a design based upon a consistent layout matrix." Gerstner
