"Like many people, I saw business and economics as something abstract, something primarily concerned with numbers." Karl Gerstner
Capital magazine was published by Adolf Theobald. The name was inspired by legendary book by Karl Marx, Kapital. Theobald concept for the magazine is "a human view of economics, an economic view of humanity."
In 1962, most of the magazine was thin and no color. This magazine was almost full in color and different kinds of paper used. Because the price of the magazine was very expensive, It was only available for subscriber. Capital was published quarterly.
This one for sure the most beautiful business magazine that I have ever seen. The design, illustration and the photography were planed wonderfully. I have never thought that I would be able to see this magazine in person. Luckily, The Herb Lubalin Study Center at the Cooper Union has couple issue of this magazine. The size of the magazine is bigger than expected. It was another pleasant surprise from visiting Cooper Union.
"The square consits of 58x58 units. The fascinating thing here is that-with a constant intercolumnar space of 2 units-all of the different columns can be divided without remainder into 58."
For the exclusiveness of this journal, there were no advertising for this magazine. Only potential clients were invited to buy the pages and designed by GGK. Below are the examples.
The grid images and quotes were taken from karl gerstner: Review of 5 x 10 years of Graphic design etc.
